Geocomposite Drainage Liners for Erosion Control

Geocomposite drainage liners to control erosion

In some industrial projects, the contractors prefer to install the geotextile and geomembrane simultaneously. A geocomposite consists of a polyethylene geomembrane with geotextile thermally laminated to one or both of its sides.

Description

What is Geocomposite?

The main concept behind geocomposites is to combine the superior features of different materials in such a way as to fulfill different goals with minimum cost and, hence, minimize the cost-to-efficiency ratio.

The functionality of geocomposites can be divided into 5 main groups:

  • Separation
  • Reinforcement
  • Filtration
  • Drainage
  • Blockage

Geocomposite classification

Geotextile-geomembrane composite:

Geotextiles can be laminated onto one or both sides of a polyethylene geomembrane.

Advantages of this product over polyethylene geomembrane include improved tear resistance, friction, and tensile strength. However, the most significant advantage of geocomposites is their faster installation, which involves only one step compared to the two steps required for geomembrane geotextile.

In the installed geocomposite, the geotextile acts as water drainage, and the geomembrane acts as a geodrain damp seal. Due to the difficulty in installing this composite on vertical walls and ceilings, it is mostly used in tunnel and building pit projects.

Advantages of geomembrane-geotextile geocomposite:

  • Protection of the geomembrane against piercing
  • Increased strength against static and dynamic loads compared to geomembrane
  • Increased tear resistance compared to geomembrane
  •  Increased friction to prevent slippage
  • Increased tensile strength compared to geomembrane
  • Faster installation compared to the individual installation of each material

Geocomposite applications:

  • Canal wall coating (to prevent water loss)
  • Landfill coating (to preserve the environment)
  • Wastewater lagoon coating (to prevent pollutant leakage to the soil and underground water)
  • Building foundation coating
  • Tunnel waterproofing
